Dean Allen Benker, 81, of Delano, passed away on February 13, in Parkview Nursing Home.
Born on June 23, 1944, in Ovid, Colo, he was the child of Albert and Ruby Benker, Julesburg Colo.
Dean worked in agriculture for many years, demonstrating his respect for the land and hard work. In 1989, he returned to college and completed a master’s degree in behavioral psychology—an accomplishment that spoke to his determination and lifelong respect for learning. He went on to work as a family therapist, specializing in helping children struggling with ADHD.
Though his career changed, Dean’s love of livestock never faded. For 41 years, he raised show rabbits, forming lasting friendships with fellow exhibitors from across the country at National Rabbit Conventions. He also raised and showed sheep for 25 years, taking extraordinary pride in his animals and in the community that came with them. Whether tending to livestock or caring for his beloved dogs, Dean’s heart was always close to animals.
He is survived by his wife Jodi, daughter Tammy and Dean Swanson, and their children Andrew, William, Charles, and Quinn of Waconia, MN; his son Adam and Sarah Vadnais, as well as their children Cora, Abe, Luke, Michela, and Brady of Bardstown, Kentucky; and son Aaron and Jessica Benker, along with their children Megan and Shelby of Montrose, MN.
The memorial service will take place at Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel in Monticello, Minnesota, on February 21, 2026. Visitation begins at 9:30 am, followed by the service at 10:30 am. A private family burial will follow.
He loved his wife, family, and animals, especially his dogs and show animals. As an only child he said before his death that all he ever wanted was a family. God surely answered his prayers.
