Derold Otterstetter, 80, passed away on February 19, 2025, in Monticello, Minnesota.
Born on June 17, 1944, in Ellendale, North Dakota.
Derold may not have earned a high school diploma or GED, but he possessed a wealth of knowledge gained through life experience. He was never shy about sharing what he knew. He had a story for EVERYTHING and was always happy to engage anyone willing to listen.
Over the years, Derold held many jobs. However, he was most proud of his time as an over-the-road trucker alongside his brothers Allen and Melvin. His work took him across the country, and he cherished the experiences and camaraderie that came with the open road.
Derold had a great love for the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were his favorite pastimes, and when those activities weren’t available, he enjoyed working around the house—fixing things, tending to the yard, and gardening. He had an even deeper love and appreciation for farm animals and pets. After the passing of his wife, Geraldyne in 2018, he lived with his brother Allen at his farm for 2-3 years. He loved every minute of his time there, especially the animals. When visiting the farm, he took great pride in showing people around the farm and giving updates on the animals. There was a very special place in his heart for dogs. The feeling was mutual. They seemed at ease with him instantly. He loved everyone’s dogs. Sometimes I think he enjoyed visiting with people’s dogs more than the people themselves. As time passed and age began to slow him down (hard to believe, I know), he found enjoyment in assembling Legos and adult coloring books while watching his beloved westerns.
Though he often presented himself as a prankster with a rough exterior (he likely invented the ‘pull my finger’ prank)- those who truly knew him understood that beneath it all was a heart of gold—especially when it came to family and close friends. He enjoyed being around people, especially those that would engage in friendly arguments. Boy, did he enjoy those friendly arguments! At the same time, he was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. You could be arguing with one minute, but if you asked for the help the next minute, he would gladly drop the argument and lend a hand. If someone told him he couldn’t do something, he would go out of his way to prove them wrong—and more often, than not, he succeeded. His determination and larger-than-life personality made him an unforgettable character who touched many lives.
He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldyne, parents Ervin and Helen; sisters Loretta Becker and Karen Scherr; and brothers Roy, Melvin, and Allen.
Derold is survived by his stepson Edward Malley, Jr (Gina), stepdaughters Gerry Morris and Julie Erickson (Shawn), siblings Delbert (Diane), Deloris Ullrich, Barbara Houn (Valentine), Pamela Waldron (Richard), Cynthia Reed, Norma Carlson (David), and Renae Hyten (Rick) many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on March 16, 2025, at Grace Lutheran Church 11185 27th Ave SE, Becker, MN 55308. The service will begin at 2:00 PM with a luncheon to follow.
Derold will be deeply missed by all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort and joy to those whose lives he touched.
