Douglas Leo Stokes, age 77 of Monticello, passed away Friday, January 13, 2023. He was born February 8, 1945 in Monticello, the son of Leo and Opal (Hersch) Stokes.
Doug graduated from Monticello High School with the class of 1963. He furthered his education at St. Cloud State University and graduated from St. Paul Bible College in St. Paul. Following college, Doug played baseball for many years, later being inducted into the Wright County Hall of Fame. He also spent time coaching baseball for many years.
Doug was the green house manager at Lawn King in Corcoran until his retirement in 2010. After retirement, Doug took on his father’s business, Stokes Marine.
Doug was a member of the Monticello Sportsman Club, White Tail Association, Rod and Gun Club, Ducks Unlimited and NRA. He enjoyed spending time playing baseball, trapshooting, goose and deer hunting, tending to his large garden, and he was an avid ice fisherman.
Doug was very detailed oriented and could fix anything and didn’t stop until it was fixed right. He was always there for anyone who needed help. Doug was wise beyond words, knowing information about everything. His kind personality will be missed by many.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Opal Stokes; sister, Diane Diederichs-Stokes; and beloved shop cat, Louie.
Doug is survived by his best friend, Carolyn Blomquist; children, Jaime Stokes, Amy Stokes, Gina Gill (Doug), Luke Blomquist (Sarah), Amos Blomquist (Kelly); step-children, Kenny Swanson (Sheryl), Wanda Penner (Jim); grandchildren, Derek, Isaac, Dylan, Jeramyah, Brady, Wyatt, Ava, Mya, Vincent, Kreeden, Skylee, Kyan, Ashlyn, Luke, Tyler, Noah; great-granddaughter, Grace; sister, Dawn Iverson(Spencer); and many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
A visitation will be held Friday, January 27, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with a time of sharing at 2:00 PM, at Peterson-Grimsmo Funeral Chapel, 250 E Broadway St, Monticello. A celebration of life will follow at 3:00 PM at the Monticello VFW.
