John L. Halvorson, age 88, of Otsego, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on September 21, 2025.
He was born September 20, 1937, in Appleton, Minnesota, to Hjalmer and Leona Halvorson. John graduated from Appleton High School in 1955 and from St. Cloud State University in 1960. He began his career as an educator, teaching four years at Henderson High School and four years at Montevideo Junior High, before transitioning into computer programming with Unisys and Medtronic. He continued his work as a consultant following retirement.
On June 11, 1960, John married Betty Stock, his devoted wife of 65 years. Together they raised their family in Columbia Heights, later moving to Coon Rapids, and enjoyed 17 years of winters at their home in Arizona.
John was an avid reader, card player, storyteller, and lifelong student of history. He enjoyed traveling, time with friends, solving puzzles, and sharing humor and wisdom with all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Steven (Julie), Jeffrey, Scott (DeAnn), and son-in-law Scott Ferrian; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents; siblings Bob, Mark, and Phyllis Schoenrock; daughter Kristen Ferrian; daughter-in-law Anne; and grandson Jacob.
Funeral service Friday, September 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Peterson-Grimsmo Funeral Chapel, 250 East Broadway, Monticello, Minnesota. Visitation one hour prior to service. Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Monticello, with light lunch to follow.
