Kay Diane (Carlson) Tyrrell

Age 79 of Big Lake

Passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep on June 8, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents Gordon E. and Charlotte (Akerson) Carlson; brother Keith Carlson; husband Richard “Dick” Tyrrell; and many other beloved relatives.

Kay is survived by her son Michael (Erin) Tyrrell; daughters Dana (Kurt) Stegora, and Christina (Ryan) Crocker; grandchildren Kaylee, Jayden, Henry, Hana, Rainna, and Wyatt; beloved sisters Karen Dunn, and Barbara Holtan; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Kay was a brilliant artist and florist. Her unique style of floral design was cherished and admired by many, as evidenced by the number of weddings she curated arrangements for over the years. She also started her own business, called Blue Mountain Collectables, where her handcrafted Santa figurines originated as hand drawn images that were then sent be manufactured. They were molded with pecan resin and returned to be painted to perfection by Kay’s steady hand.

She was no ordinary cook. Her gourmet meals were treasured gifts, made and served with love and a passion to see others enjoy her craft. Her delicious meals will be missed almost as much as she will be.

Kay had a deep appreciation for nature, often calling details to others’ attention. You could often find her picking berries from chokecherry trees, raspberry bushes, or blueberry patches, and she cherished all that Mother Nature had to offer. She was sure to share her observations with others so they could also enjoy the sights and sounds of the landscapes surrounding her.

The Tyrrell home was carefully and thoughtfully decorated. She made a tremendous effort in selecting each piece of décor. Everything had a story and a purpose. Kay was able to tie her flair for decorating into a thing of beauty, making each area a true work of art.

We rejoice that Kay has joined her family in heaven and take comfort in knowing she is resting peacefully. We will miss the times we spent with her but look forward to seeing her again someday.

A Celebration of Life, during which we will also honor her 80th birthday, will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, July 16th, with visitation 1 hour prior, followed by a luncheon. The service will be at held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church located at 11024 Church St. NE, Hanover, MN 55341.
