Lois Marie Hultberg

Lois Marie Hultberg was born to Eric and Ella Hultberg on April 19, 1938 on the family dairy farm six miles west of Monticello, MN. Lois joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven on February 25, 2025.

Her personal relationship with Jesus Christ started on June 17, 1951. It was then that she dedicated her life to serve God. 

She and her younger brother, Stan, walked through the woods and across a field to attend country school, District 124. After graduating from Monticello High School in May 1955, Lois worked as a file clerk at Minneapolis Honeywell Regulators in Minneapolis. She attended Bethel College in St. Paul from 1956-1958, then transferred to St. Cloud State to study Elementary Education and graduated in 1960. She enjoyed teaching at Annandale Public School for three years. She then went back to St. Paul Bible College to get a degree in Bible Study. Lois recalled that back when she was a second grader the thought came to her, “It sure would be fun to be a teacher” and it was! 

After a year of Spanish language study in San Jose, Costa Rica, the Christian and Missionary Alliance appointed her to teach at the Alliance Academy International in Quito, Ecuador. From December, 1965 to June, 2004, she taught 5th and 6th grade and worked in the elementary library. 

She returned to St. Cloud State for 14 months, earning a master’s degree in elementary education in 1970. She returned to earn a second masters in informational media in 1990. Lois was honored by Crown College at a special event in 2001, where she received an award for Teacher of the Year.

Her fond memories of growing up on the dairy farm showed in her cow collection. Her collection began back in Costa Rica during a Spanish conversation class, and grew from there. “The teacher asked about the color of cows’ eyes and cows got to be a funny thing,” she said. “I got the first cow from the secretary of the language school.”

There were more than 400 cows in her collection in Ecuador, but she just couldn’t bring every one of them back. “I set them out and asked people to take a cow and pray for me,” she said. 

Shortly after getting settled back in Monticello, Lois began substituting for librarians in the Great River Regional Library system. For several years she was a volunteer teacher’s assistant at Pinewood Elementary for Sharon Stoick. After returning to Monticello, she was able to expand her herd of cows to previous levels.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Eric and Ella Hultberg; and her sister-in-law Dorothy.

Surviving Lois are her brother, Stanley of Monticello; Nephews: Scott (Stacey) of Monticello, Mark (Kristi) of Elk River, Jeremy (Maureen) of Sebeka, and Adam (Amy) of New York Mills, 10 great nieces and nephews and nine great-great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Riverside Alliance Church in Monticello on Friday, March 7 at 1:00 with visitation one hour prior to the service. Fellowship will follow the service with interment in the Becker Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Peterson-Grimsmo Funeral Chapel ~ Monticello. 763-295-2918.
