Marilyn (Toots) Ann Koshiol Frie, 91, of Monticello, Minnesota, adored by every generation of her family and lifelong friends, peacefully passed away on January 13, 2026 at Willows Landing Senior Living Community. Visitation will be Friday, April 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Saint Henry Catholic Church, 1001 East 7th Street, Monticello. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Father Patrick Barnes officiating. Lunch will follow at Monticello Country Club. There will be a private interment. Funeral arrangements are with the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel of Monticello. Marilyn was born on March 23, 1934 to Mary and Gregor Koshiol at their family home in Lake Henry, Minnesota. She grew up in Melrose, Minnesota and attended Melrose High School where she met her husband of 71 years, Richard (Dick) Frie. They were married in 1954 and moved to Monticello after Dick's college graduation the following year, where she began her career raising three children. Once all the children were in elementary school, Marilyn worked as an administrative secretary at Hart Clinic. From there, she began her life's work as a licensed Medical Records Technician (MRT) at Monticello-Big Lake Community Hospital. She became the Director of Health Information Management (HIM) for over 30 years, managing staff and coordinating with medical teams to comply with health record policies. Although Marilyn was a working mother outside of the home, her priority was nurturing her children and doting on her beloved grandchildren. She was found cheering in the bleachers at many sporting events, in the gallery at countless golf tournaments and attending many athletic banquets to support her husband, grandkids and great grandkids. As a devout Catholic, she prayed a daily rosary and attended Sunday Mass for most of her life. In retirement, she became an avid bird watcher, keeping a journal of the birds' arrival at her feeders every spring. She kept an especially watchful eye out for her favorite Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Geraniums, petunias, impatiens and begonias brightened her planters every summer. Comfort food was her specialty, she cooked everything from meatloaf, pheasant, duck, goose and venison, to Cornish game hens for Dick, who craved her menus of meat and potatoes. In retirement, she enjoyed the winter months with family in Palm Springs, California and Sun Lakes, Arizona. Marilyn's husband, her "hero" Dick, passed away a few days after her death. He said he couldn't live without her, and he was right, graced with eternal rest on January 17, 2026. She is survived by her three children Daniel (Jean) Frie, Mark (Patti) Frie and Mary (Patrick) O'Hara; 6 grandchildren John (Lyndsey Pittman) Frie, Andy (Katie Krause) Frie, Matthew Frie, Alison (Zac) Schuller, Leila (Jack) Lavey and Joe (Alli) O'Hara; 10 great-grandchildren, plus one on the way. She is also survived by her brother Robert (Joyce) Koshiol; brother-in-law Robert (Elsie) Schmainda; and many nieces and nephews and dear friends. Marilyn was preceded in death by her infant son Richard Gregory (Ricky); parents Gregor and Mary (Uhlenkamp) Koshiol; and sister Elizabeth (Elsie) Schmainda. The family is very grateful for the years of professional care provided by the compassionate staffs of Willows Landing, Cherrywood Assisted Living and Brighton Hospice.
