Patricia Jo (Hockenberry) Hill

It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Patricia Jo (Hockenberry) Hill. Pat died Monday, August 5, 2024, while in North Memorial Hospital, Robbinsdale, at the age of 88. She was surrounded by her family and holding the hand of her beloved Hib. Pat was born March 29, 1936, to Berniece (Dickinson) and Vernon Hockenberry in Oakes, North Dakota. She met the love of her life, Hibbert Hill, as a freshman at Valley City North Dakota High School. The couple graduated in 1954 and married that same year.

Pat spent her early married years following their 5 children to and from their school events. However, she always made time for her bridge group, Welcome Wagon events, Women’s Golf League, and numerous other community events. She was especially proud of the role she played in getting the pool added to what is now the Monticello Middle School. Pat and Hib spent many years traveling the world. At the end of Hib’s teaching career, he taught in Abu Dhabi. Pat enjoyed spending a month or two every year in the Middle East with him.

Pat was a longtime employee at the Monticello Post Office delivering mail to the rural areas of the city. During the early 70’s, along with her postal job, Pat started her own tax preparation business. First preparing taxes from her home and as the business grew, she moved to an office in downtown Monticello. Pat enjoyed both of her careers and often spoke of her conversations with farmers, families and friends. She considered every customer and client a friend and never missed an opportunity to greet or catch-up with them.  A quick trip to the store was unheard of!

Pat carried her passion for people outside of Monticello as she and Hib prepared, and served meals for years at Higher Grounds, a men’s homeless shelter in Minneapolis.

Grandchildren soon noticed that grandma knew everyone and truly cared about all. She enjoyed as many of their school events as possible, staying to visit with friends and family after those events.

Pat is survived by her husband of 70 years Hibbert Hill; children, Scott (Beth) Hill, Scooter (Karen) Hill, Nick (Lauri) Hill and Jeannie (Bill) Sonsteby; siblings, Linda (John) Greenaway, Tom (Edie) Hockenberry; 9 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Berniece and Vernon Hockenberry, in-laws, Jean and Sam Hill; daughter, Patricia Jo Humphrey; grandson, Michael Hill; brother, Dr. Jim Hockenberry.

Pat will be deeply missed by many and carried in the hearts of her family. We love you Pat!, Mom!, Grandma!

A memorial service will be held Friday, September 13, 2024 at 12:00 pm, with visitation beginning at 11:00 am, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 9300 Jason Ave NE, Monticello, MN.
