Dr. Philip "Phil" White, age 82 of Monticello, MN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 12, 2023 at Guardian Angels By The Lake Senior Living in Elk River, MN.
Phil was born on November 28, 1941, to Wilfred and Harriett White of Ruthton, MN. His beautiful life can be attributed to his love of God, family, and a Hersey's chocolate. Phil lit up the room with his sarcastic humor and tendency for the creative in both his story telling and his game playing. He unapologetically and quite obviously would cheat to win any game he played, but would do so with "honesty" and a smile.
He attended Ruthton High School where he graduated in 1959 and was crowned Homecoming King. Phil enlisted in the Air Force when he was 22, and served during the Vietnam War. His love of country and pride for serving was exhibited through the Air Force attire he frequently wore to family and social gatherings, and the flag he proudly flew outside his home. He dutifully served for 25 years and retired a Lieutenant Colonel after being stationed in Anchorage, Alaska and moving back to Minnesota to put down roots in Monticello. He met the love of his life, Doreen "Dory" Geiss, from Hutchinson, MN through Dory's brother, Jon. They were married in 1963 and have two children.
Phil's passion for paying it forward and his outgoing personality served him well as he worked over three decades as the local dentist in Monticello, MN. Phil started his dentistry career (after graduating from the University of Minnesota) in Anchorage, AK, following in his father's footsteps by pursuing dentistry. In 1968 he joined "Doc" Erlandson in private practice where he happily served his local community until he retired at the age of 59.
In retirement, Phil was an active member of Monticello's Trinity Lutheran Church as President of the church council. He also volunteered and sat on the board of Monticello's city council. He cherished time spent with his children, grandchild, and great-grandchild. Phil enjoyed fishing with his son, Scott, on annual fishing trips up to Canada. He shared a love for family and traveled to various school and sporting events with his daughter, Jolayne, and always looked forward to discussing his service, latest reads, and oral hygiene with his granddaughter, Samantha. After 43 years of marriage, and a long battle with cancer, Dory received her heavenly wings in 2006. Phil got the rare gift of second love with his wife, Olive "Ollie" and married her on August 28, 2010. Ollie and Phil were blessed with 13 years of a beautiful marriage. He enjoyed traveling with her and got to share his love with even more family. Phil enjoyed walks around the local Community Center track, Monday morning coffee with friends, shooting and hunting with his friends and family, and reading the local paper over a bowl of cheerios.
Phil is survived by his wife of 13 years, Olive; children, Jolayne (Gordy) and Scott; granddaughter, Samantha; great-grandson, Jaxson; sister, Lenore (Steve); brother, Richard; extended family, Jon and Kim (Mike); and many other loving relatives and friends.
Phil is preceded in death by his wife, Doreen; parents, Wilfred and Harriet; and brother, John.
A Christian Funeral will be held for Phil at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at Monticello's Trinity Lutheran Church, 449 W Broadway Street, Monticello, MN 55362. Visitation will be held two hours prior to service from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. Interment at Fort Snelling Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
