After his active duty discharge he served three years in the Naval Reserve. In June of 1969, he graduated from Metropolitan State Junior College with an Associate of Arts Degree.
Richard was a hard worker. He started working during his school years, by caddying at local golf courses and delivering newspapers. After his Navy service, he began a long career with the Post Office, working for them for 57 years, attaining a supervisory position. He also returned to delivering newspaper for the Star Tribune as an adult along with his fulltime job with USPS. Coin collecting was one of his hobbies. Another pastime that he enjoyed years ago, was using a metal detector to comb beaches, parks, etc., looking for metal objects.
