Sandra “Sandy” Lynn Rust (Schirmer), 59, of Monticello, passed away on March 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Sandy loved deeply and lived selflessly. Witty, charismatic, and endlessly thoughtful, she had a gift for making people feel special. She brought laughter into every room, gave the most meaningful gifts, and could turn a simple DIY project into something beautiful. To know her was to experience her generosity, humor, and wholehearted love.
She earned her degree in Elementary Education from Saint Cloud State University and devoted her children’s early years to being a stay-at-home Mom. She spent nearly 20 years with the Monticello School District as a Title One Paraprofessional, where she poured patience and encouragement into countless students. Later, she joyfully stepped into her favorite role — stay-at-home Grandma — spending her days with the light of her life, her beloved grandson, William (“BW”). Her love for William was boundless, and she cherished every moment spent as his Grandma.
Sandy was a proud and loving wife to Tom Rust. She was a devoted Mother to Rachel Rust and Bryanna (Steven) Thomas, and a deeply adored Grandma to William Robinson. She is survived by her loving parents, Dale and Kathy Schirmer; her sister, Suzy (Cory) Thorstenson; her sister-in-law, Julie Allen; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She is also remembered by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who held a special place in her heart.
She is reunited with her cherished son, Ryan Rust; her parents-in-law, Gene and Sonja Rust; and her grandparents, Harry and Betty Schirmer and George and Catherine Schaming.
Sandy loved arts and crafts, dachshunds, cozy days at home, and being surrounded by family — including her many four-legged friends, especially Lucy. She always put others first and loved with her whole heart.
Her legacy is one of laughter, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family.
A private celebration of life will be held to honor Sandy’s memory.
