William "Bill" Renner Obituary

William “Bill” Joseph Renner, 77, passed away peacefully at his home in Big Lake, MN, surrounded by family on September 9, 2024. Bill was born in Wahpeton, North Dakota. He grew up in Walker, MN, and graduated from Walker High School in 1965. He attended St. John’s University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Instrumental Music Education. During this time, he also attended ROTC and subsequently served as First Lieutenant for two years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  He was honorably discharged in 1976. Bill then was a band director at the school district in Royalton, MN for six years. During his final year there, he met the love of his life, Peggy Ohnsorg. He went on to teach in Becker, MN for several years and ultimately ended his teaching career in Monticello, MN. Bill and Peggy were married in 1980 and later welcomed two daughters, Heather, and Heidi, whom he adored with all of his heart.

The Holy Spirit was Bill’s Lifeline 24/7. He was a simple man with no need of material things to be happy, always content with just the necessities. Music was always playing, and a major part of his life. He loved golfing, dancing, skiing, playing chess, cribbage, attending a variety of concerts, and took pride in his lawn and home.

Among Bill’s highest priorities were his love for God, his wife and family. He cherished his church family and was a very active member of the Church of Saint Henry’s through music ministry, lecturing, KC’s liturgy committee, small group facilitator, etc. Bill’s battle with multiple, chronic medical conditions was a witness to many, as his trust and faith in God always shined through even during the toughest of times.

Bill touched many hearts, especially family, and will always be fondly remembered.

He is preceded in death by parents Tony and Vivian Renner; siblings Marilyn Becker, Tom (Sandy) Renner, and Anita (Ron) Westrup; father-in-law Andy Ohnsorg; and brothers-in-law Bob Crumpton, and Bob Ohnsorg; and nephew Scott Westrup.

He is survived by spouse Peggy; daughters Heather (Tim) Hawkinson, and Heidi (Levi) Peterson; and grandchildren Emily, Maria, Sophia, Logan, Mia, and Hope. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11AM on Monday, September 16, 2024 with visitation 1½ hours prior to Mass at the Church of Saint Henry, 1001 E. 7th Street, Monticello. Interment to follow at St. Henry’s Church Cemetery.
